More about McGill

If you want to find out more about Donald McGill here are some of the books and articles that have been written about him.

Donald McGill - Postcard Artist

Author: Bernard Crossley
Publisher: Greaves & Thomas, Ryde, Isle of Wight
Date: 2014
ISBN: 978-0-95-222585-0

The most comprehensive book yet written about McGill and is essential reading for any collector.

It includes a detailed look at his family with never seen before photographs and letters. Bernard Crossley was fortunate to be able to draw on the support of McGill's grandsons who provided him with invaluable background information and resources.

Some attempt is made to try to untangle the professional side of McGill's life with what is known so far. There is also a detailed section on the court battles McGill had to endure towards the end of his career.

Lavishly illustrated, well written and beautifully produced this is, as I said before, essential!!

McGill's War. A History of Life in Britain during the Great War illustrated by the art of Donald Fraser McGill

Author: John Paul Wilton
Publisher: Firestep Press, Brighton
Date: 2014
ISBN: 978-1-908487-98-8

An interesting idea that, for me, doesn't quite deliver. The author has collected together some representative postcards (all of which are identified with publisher, series and number) and there is some attempt to put them into the context of the Great War. However for the majority the front and reverse of each card is illustrated but the only accompanying text repeats the messages written on the card.

There is also a section which looks at other types of Great War postcards and censor marks.

This book is nicely produced though and was published to raise funds for the Canine Partners Charity so is well worth buying.

I came across this book when I had a similar idea for a blog. I have since set up a Pinterest site - Donald McGill & World War One - which develops this idea further.

The Art of Donald McGill

Author: George Orwell
Publisher: Horizon - A Review of Literature and Art. Vol. IV, No.21
Date: September 1941

Originally published in the monthly Horizon magazine this essay by George Orwell was the first written piece to take McGill's art seriously.

In 2010 the Donald McGill Museum did a nice job of reprinting Orwell's essay and included many of the postcards referenced by Orwell but were not illustrated in the original article.

A text-only version of the essay can be found online here - www.orwell.ru/library/reviews/McGill/english/e_mcgill
